Speaking at an event in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Monday, Governor Rochas Okorocha, has appointed his wife, Nkechi, to chair the state’s amnesty committee.
While inaugurating the committee at Government House in Owerri, the governor charged its members to come up with programmes and ideas that would ensure the sustenance of the peace in the state.
He urged the committee to address all the issues the ex-militants had raised when they surrendered their arms to the state government.
According to Reporters, the influential APC politician, said the government will commence immediate rehabilitation of repentant militants, provide job opportunities as well as begin massive infrastructural development of oil producing communities as requested by the former militants.
He accused some traditional rulers of using militants to their advantage, ordering the cancellation of all the memorandum of understanding (MoU) entered into with the oil companies.
The governor revealed that the decision to cancel the MoU with the oil companies is to draft a new one that will correct all lapses and address agitations by militants and host communities.
He charged the committee work towards ensuring that the militants who emB.raced peace were no longer regarded militants.
Okorocha asked the committee to submit its report within three months.
